Gaming SMALLab: Pancake Express

Since July, the Institute of Play and Arizona State University’s K-12 Embodied Media and Learning group have been developing a suite of game-based learning models in SMALLab (Situated Multimeda Art Learning Lab), a mixed reality learning environment developed by ASU’s David Birchfield. In this mod of game designer Kyle Li’s “Pancake Express,” players use a wireless controller and their own 3-D movements to pour, flip and “cook” a stack of virtual pancakes in SMALLab NYC’s physical interaction space. Although the team spends most of their time working on game scenarios that explore systems thinking and math learning in the SMALLab environment, they do take the occasional break to make pancakes.
