Green Machine
A project to develop super-engaging sustainable design and engineering activities for youth
Green Machine brings together educators, experts and designers from New York City’s top cultural institutions to collaboratively develop activities for youth, with a focus on sustainable design, engineering and community engagement. Activities are challenge-based and grounded in scientific inquiry and hands-on problem-solving. They are designed to be used in a variety of informal learning contexts and address topics like water quality, extending product life cycles and sustainable building.
Participating institutions include the Mozilla Foundation, the New York Hall of Science, Teachers’ College at Columbia University, The Afterschool Corporation, MOUSE, Eyebeam Studios and Iridescent.
The curriculum development process comprises informal workshops, called Curriculum Jams, and testing sessions with youth. Activities are piloted in the after-school program at the New York City public school Quest to Learn, before being distributed more widely across the Hive Learning Network NYC.
