SMALLab Games

A project to design digital games for a mixed-reality learning environment, called SMALLab

Based on a technology platform developed by David Birchfield while at Arizona State University, SMALLab (Situated Multimedia Art Learning Lab) uses motion-capture cameras, short-throw projectors and wireless controllers to immerse players in dynamic game-based scenarios, where they can interact with each other and digital game elements in real time in shared physical space.

The scenarios the Institute develops using SMALLab aim to bring learning to life by engaging kids in full-body physical activity. All scenarios are mapped to Common Core standards, integrated into the Quest Schools curricula and designed to support situated learning, large-group participation, team work, complex problem solving and fun physical activity. Scenarios arise through the collaboration of Institute game designers, curriculum specialists and Quest teachers and wellness experts.
